Growing Through Loss and Living with Love

Losing a loved one can have a profound and lasting impact on a person.

Are you struggling with the sudden loss of a spouse, a parent, or a child, wondering if you can ever feel happy or whole again? Has their passing left you numb or indifferent to relationships and pleasures you once enjoyed? Have you lost someone to suicide or addiction and want to reconcile longing for their presence with the anger, resentment, or unfounded self-blame you feel? Whatever loss you’re facing, we are here to support you.

At Thrive Postpartum, Couples and Family Therapy, your grief is welcome. We’ll help you honor what you’ve lost and begin to live again, without leaving your loved one behind.

When Heartache Consumes Your Life

Unfortunately, grieving isn’t exactly a linear process. Oftentimes, it can be an emotional roller coaster that knocks you back and forth. With compassionate guidance and support, you can learn to live alongside your grief — not by leaving it behind, but by integrating it with care. Over time, many people find moments of hope, clarity, and even joy begin to reemerge.

We work with individuals, couples, and families navigating grief and loss. This includes those who have experienced perinatal loss, the death of a child, partner, or parent, as well as those struggling with other significant life transitions such as divorce, medical diagnoses, or job loss. We also support children and teens who may not have the language to express their grief and need a safe space to process their emotions.

Grief and loss can shake our sense of self, purpose, and connection — not because something is wrong with us, but because something deeply meaningful has changed. Therapy can offer a supportive space to explore the many layers of grief, including:

The unpredictable nature of grief and how it shows up differently for each person

The struggle to make sense of life and loss in a world that feels unfamiliar

The way grief affects relationships — and how couples and families may grieve in very different ways

The presence of trauma and how it may be intertwined with grief

The tension between cultural pressure to “move on” and the deeper work of learning to live with grief

Feelings of guilt, regret, or self-blame — especially after perinatal loss, suicide, or addiction-related deaths

The role of spirituality or existential questions that often emerge in the wake of loss

Therapy doesn’t aim to erase grief — it honors it. And in that honoring, space opens up for relief, meaning, and the possibility of living with grief in a more integrated and sustainable way.

You Deserve to Rediscover Joy

We believe that grief isn’t something to “get over” but something to learn to live with in a way that allows for both healing and remembering. Our work is deeply compassionate and tailored to each person’s experience. We help clients explore their emotions, process difficult memories, and find ways to honor their loss while continuing to live a meaningful life.

Some of the ways we do this include talking through emotions, exploring patterns in thinking and behavior, using body-based techniques to manage stress, and providing creative outlets for expressing grief. We also guide clients in developing coping strategies for when grief feels overwhelming.

    Holding Space for Healing

At Thrive Postpartum, Couples, and Family Therapy, our approach is deeply rooted in a systemic and attachment-based framework, recognizing that grief impacts not just the individual but their entire relational system. We utilize a blend of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and EMDR for grief complicated by trauma.

We also incorporate somatic awareness and mindfulness techniques to help clients regulate their nervous systems. For children, we integrate play therapy and expressive arts to provide a non-verbal outlet for their emotions. Our work is highly personalized, meeting each client where they are and co-creating a path forward that honors their unique grief experience.

      What a Session is Like

A session begins with a warm, welcoming space where you can speak openly without judgment. If it’s your first session, we’ll take time to understand your story—who or what you lost, how grief has been affecting your daily life, and any specific concerns or triggers you’ve been facing.

From there, we may explore how your past experiences with loss influence how you are grieving now. Some sessions may focus on talking through emotions, while others may involve guided exercises to help process grief in a way that feels right for you. For instance, if you’re experiencing intense guilt, we may work on reframing your thoughts to allow for self-compassion. If trauma is part of your loss, we may gently begin processing those memories in a way that feels safe and controlled.

In sessions with children or teens, we often use creative methods like drawing, storytelling, or play therapy to help them express emotions they might not have words for. For couples or families, we facilitate conversations to help each member understand and support one another in their grief.
